ABOUT 'WILD STYLE'

WILD STYLE is a cult movie, the first and greatest Hip Hop movie of all time. WILD STYLE captures New York's 1981 Hip Hop culture and several prominent figures including Busy Bee Starski, Fab Five Freddy, Grandmaster Flash, Rock Steady Crew, Grandmaster Caz and his group The Cold Crush Brothers, and one of the godfathers of Hip Hop and the inventor of the Scratch: Grand Wizzard Theodore.

WILD STYLE immortalizes the birth of the underground Hip Hop scene about to explode around the world, changing the face of music, fashion, art and the way of life forever. Following street artist Zorro (played by legendary subway artist Lee Quinones) and his crew as they journey through the street, projects and train yards of New York, keeping one step ahead of the cops and their rivals, the film climaxes in one of the most famous Hip Hop concerts in history - featuring the pioneers at the forefront of a cultural revolution including DJs, emcees and breakers such as Grandmaster Caz and the Cold Crush Brothers, Grand Wizzard Theodore and The Fantastic Freaks, Grandmaster Flash, Busy B, Fab 5 Freddy, Lady Pink, the Rock Steady Crew, Rammellzee.

Originally released in 1983, Wild Style, the original motion picture soundtrack, is the first and best Hip Hop movie soundtrack - produced by Chris Stein of Blondie fame and Fab Five Freddy. It's a snapshot of the scene as it evolved from the streets to the recording studio. But it is not just a vital document, it is also a damn good listen. The line-up is a who is who of those who stood out from hip-hop’s nascent block party days. The Double Trouble pairing of Rodney Cee and KK Rockwell, The Chief Rocker himself, Busy Bee, the mighty Grandmaster Caz and Dj Grand Wizzard Thedore, line-ups of both The Cold Crush Brothers and The Fantastic Freaks.

The music captures the free-form, roaming nature of the film – it is rough at the edges, it is occasionally amateurish, but it is completely, utterly glorious. Over time, those sounds – Grand Wizzard Theodore's scratches, the indelible lyrics - have become hip-hop touchstones, endlessly sampled and referenced, the bedrock of so much music to follow. That is because the soundtrack perfectly encapsulated the essence of the film, the scene and hip-hop’s emergence from The Bronx to the attention of the wider world. The original Wild Style soundtrack is such a landmark that it has spread its DNA throughout Hip Hop ever since.
