ABOUT KRUSH GROOVE
Krush Groove represents a nostalgic look into hip-hop during its early days. However, this movie has become a historic genre piece. Several recording artists were already famous, but their popularity transitioned to legendary status as time passed.
When Krush Groove was originally released 40 years ago it was the seminal music movie, the first all Rap musical.
Sheila E., Kurtis Blow, the Fat Boys, Run-Dmc, Rick Rubin, star in this feature-film romp through New York's teen subculture. They're talented street-savvy urbanites on the move after hooking up with a new record label. But with their success comes ego trips and greed that threaten to destroy everything they've worked for. There are also appearances by artists such as New Edition, The Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J.
Krush Groove is based on the early days of Def Jam Records and its cofounder, Russell Simmons. Here Def Jam is “Krush Groove”, and Russell Simmons is “Russell Walker.” We follow Russell as he makes several horrible business decisions on his way to establishing Krush Groove Records. It also follows the Fat Boys as they go from a group of fat rapping high school students into fat rap stars.
A 23-title soundtrack vibrantly powers this rags-to-riches story, directed by Michael Schultz (Car Wash, Greased Lightning). So, get ready for Krush Groove the movie (which marked Blair Underwood's feature-film debut) – and get down with its music, featuring hits by the aforementioned musical stars as well as New Edition, plus seminal tracks from Sheila E, Kurtis Blow, Debbie Harry, Chaka Khan, The Fat Boys, the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Run Dmc, the Gap Band and more!
ABOUT KURTIS BLOW
Clap your hands everybody if you got what it takes, 'cause I'm Kurtis Blow and I want you to know that these are the breaks!" Who doesn’t know this rhyme?
Kurtis Blow, one of the founding fathers of Hip Hop, is the first commercially successful solo rap artist in history.
In 1979, at the age of 20, native New Yorker Kurtis Blow paved the way for Hip Hop artists when he became the first rapper to sign with a major record label, Mercury Records, and soon achieved commercial success with the release of “Christmas Rappin’” and “The Breaks, the latter representing the first certified gold rap song in history.
He released 10 Albums over 11 years -- The first entitled “Kurtis Blow”, his full length debut and his second, a Top 50 Pop Album “Deuce,” a big hit across Europe; “Party Time” which featured a pioneering fusion of Rap and Go Go; “Ego Trip,” which includes the hits “8 Million Stories”, “AJ”, and “Basketball” and in 1985, “America.” “America’s video innovation received an MTV Monitor Award. From this album, the song “If I Ruled the World” became a top 5 hit on Billboard’s R & B chart. Columbia/Sony recording artist Nas debuted at # 1 on the Billboard’s Pop Album chart with a cover of the song in 1997. Since then, he has continued to carry the torch, blending rap and go-go in his unique style to create other hits that have collectively become part of the soundtrack of hip hop from “If I Ruled the World” to “Basketball.” . He is the first who went on a national and international concert tour.
His 80s hit “Basketball” is a basketball anthem and played at NBA games. In 2024 DoorDash renewed its multi-year partnership deal as the on-demand delivery platform partner of the NBA and WNBA. To celebrate the news, the company partnered with legendary Kurtis Blow to update his 1984 song “Basketball.”. The new Song “Basketball 2.0”, Blow updated the lyrics to include current NBA stars such as Luka Dončić, Kevin Durant and Nikola Jokić. And WNBA athletes get a spotlight, too, with rapper Lola Brooke performing a feature verse calling out Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark, Jonquel Jones and other WNBA stars. Directed by Dave & Cassidy Meyers (Coldplay, Sabrina Carpenter, Harry Styles, Billy Ellish), the single was produced by hit producer Hit-Boy (Drake, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Nas, A$AP Rocky). The new song is performed and played at NBA games across North America.
Besides his own work, Kurtis has been responsible for Rap hits by The Fat Boys and Run DMC. Run began his career billed as “The son of Kurtis Blow.” Love Bug Starski, Sweet Gee, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Full Force, Russell Simmons and Wyclef Jean have all been produced or have worked with Blow in the past. Additionally former label mates Rene & Angela had their chart-topping debut “Save Your Love for # 1” gift wrapped by Kurtis Blow.
